The ‘Suffrage in Egham’ project is a multi-faceted project funded by Arts Council England which aims to engage local people in their own suffrage history.

We have a team of volunteer researchers, led by a paid Research Intern, who are in the process of uncovering stories which relate to the suffrage movement in Egham and the local area linked to the Representation of the People Act in 1918 and the Reform Bill in 1928 which gave more and more women the right to vote.  We are looking at the differences between the Suffragists who were peaceful campaigners for women’s rights, and their more famous counterparts the Suffragettes, who often resorted to more violent measures to make themselves heard.  From our research so far it appears as though Egham had both, as well as a prominent Anti-Suffrage League.

This research will be displayed in our summer pop-up exhibition which will run from Monday 11th June until Saturday 16th June in the United Church, Egham.  The exhibition sits within a wider Festival of community events.  The Festival will incorporate and scale up both existing artistic activities and develop a new community and schools programme, using the arts as a means of interpreting the past.  Through the Festival, our aim is to join up the currently disparate and uncoordinated strands of artistic activity in Egham to create a new and distinctive arts offer for the community and visitors; to forge a new and resilient cultural education partnership between Egham Museum, Royal Holloway University and the Egham Town Team; and to promote Egham as a vibrant cultural destination in its own right.

In addition to the ongoing research, we have a lively ‘History Through the Arts’ programme of events. These events range from artistic workshops and children’s craft activities to debates and discussions.  Please see our “What’s On” page for more information.
